In early 2013, whilst we were busy making plans for the expansion of our purpose-built headquarters, land surveys were carried out before construction began and it was discovered we had a protected species of Great Crested Newt on our site in Winsford, Cheshire.

The Great Crested Newt is the biggest and least common of the three UK native newt species found in the British Isles and is one of only three amphibians protected by the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. It is therefore the subject of much research and monitoring in an effort to reverse the decline in its numbers.

Before continuing with the expansion we therefore sought the help of Cheshire Ecological Services who put together a 3 year habitat management plan for the Great Crested Newt on our site which included allocating a designated wildlife area for the newts with habitat mounds, enhanced hedgerow and the planting of new trees.

This plan enabled us to continue with our proposed building work, and we’re pleased to say that any newts on our site now have a specialist ‘safe haven’ to go to and our employees are also enjoying their new facilities.

A sunny spring day welcomed the runners taking part in Run Marbury 10km on 9th March 2014. Amongst the 350 participants was our very own Stephanie Taylor, who took part in the challenging 10km loop through the woodland trails of Marbury Country Park in Cheshire.

Steph completed the course in a great time, whilst also raising a brilliant £350 for local charity St Luke’s Hospice.

It was the first time the Run Marbury 10km event had taken place and after it being such a great success the organisers are hoping to hold another event later in the year. So keep your eyes peeled to see if Steph takes up the next Run Marbury challenge…

Run Marbury 10km

Run Marbury 10km helped raise money for two very special charities:

St Luke’s is an adult hospice based near to the Vaseco office in Winsford that cares for people from Mid and South Cheshire suffering from cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. It is a non-profit making organisation funded by voluntary contributions and local Clinical Commissioning Groups.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK is a charity with a single purpose – to grant magical wishes to children and young people aged 3-17 fighting life-threatening conditions. Make-A-Wish has granted more than 8,000 magical wishes and for many families this can be the last happy memory they have of their child having fun in a magical world, surrounded by family and friends – rather than memories of days and weeks of painful treatments and hospitalisation. In years to come, the family can look back and remember that special time.
